This extra-large Bolga basket is handwoven from elephant grass in Bolgatanga, northern Ghana. The extra size holds a grocery shop, towels or blankets, firewood by the hearth, or toys kept off the floor. Fine stripes of warm tones and natural grass run around the whole body of this woven basket, with a leather-wrapped handle over the top.

Round Bolga baskets are coiled from elephant grass in Bolgatanga, northern Ghana.
The pattern is the weaver’s own, worked out over years of practice, and the colour is dyed into the grass before weaving so it runs right through the fibre.

Soyiokoo Marry, one of Bashiri’s weavers in Bolgatanga, learned weaving from her mother and aunts, whom she describes as the best weavers of their time.
She names the round basket as her favourite to weave.
She also trades fruit and vegetables at the market, set out in fruit bowls she wove herself.

The extra large size handles shopping, picnic gear, and storage around the house, with leather handles made from offcuts.
