Bolga shoulder bags are soft, handwoven basket bags made by artisans in and around Bolgatanga, Northern Ghana, using sustainably sourced elephant grass.
The grass is locally grown, hand-dyed with non-toxic dyes, and woven into a flexible, lightweight bag that sits comfortably on the shoulder.
Each bag is finished with upcycled leather straps and a simple top closure, making it practical for carrying everyday personal items.
Every piece is woven by hand, supporting long-standing weaving traditions and fair, ongoing work for local families.
Bolga shoulder bags are designed for carrying on the body, with a softer, more flexible weave, and leather straps that sit comfortably over the shoulder.
They’re lighter and more malleable than most market or oval baskets, making them well suited to everyday essentials and travel.
Market baskets and oval baskets have a firmer structure and open handles, designed to carry heavier loads and hold their shape when set down. Shoulder bags prioritise comfort, movement, and ease, while other Bolga basket styles focus more on capacity and structure.
Our Bolga shoulder bags are available in both open-weave and closed-weave styles. They’re woven in a wide range of colour combinations, from bright and patterned to more neutral, earthy tones.
You can choose your bag in two ways: with our Colour of Your Choice option, where you select preferred colour tones and we choose a bag to match, or by selecting from individually listed bags, where each piece is photographed, named, and sent exactly as shown.
Shoulder bags are packed to help maintain their shape in transit and are shipped from Australia.
