African mudcloth is a traditional West African textile from Mali, made from woven cotton cloth, then dyed and patterned by hand.
Often called bogolan, Malian mudcloth uses motifs that can carry meaning.
Artisans build the design in layers, painting on sections and dyeing the cloth again and again, including the use of fermented mud to deepen colour and define the motifs. Patterns commonly draw on proverbs, animals, and lived history, which is part of what gives mudcloth its distinctive look beyond simple decoration.
Mudcloth is worked in stages, with the design added and deepened over multiple rounds of dyeing. The result is a textile with a finish that shows the handwork up close.
