A vegan Bolga basket is finished with a handle woven from elephant grass rather than the leather handle used on standard Bolga baskets, so no animal materials are used anywhere on it.
The body of the Bolga basket is coiled by hand from elephant grass (veta vera) grown around Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region of Ghana. It differs from the leather-handled round Bolga baskets only in the handle, not in how the basket is woven.
Alongside the vegan round baskets, the full vegan basket range includes styles like planter baskets and oval vegan baskets, all finished without leather.
Vegan round baskets come in three sizes: small at 20 to 29cm across the top, medium at 29 to 36cm, and large at 36 to 42cm.
All three are coiled by hand by Frafra weavers in Bolgatanga, so the exact size varies slightly from one basket to the next.
