Round Bolga baskets are woven in Bolgatanga, in the Upper East Region of northern Ghana. Elephant grass grown on the White Volta flood plains is harvested, dried, then split and rolled by hand to strengthen it.
The extra size holds a grocery shop, towels or blankets, firewood by the hearth, or toys kept off the floor. The tight coiled weave holds its shape under a full load.
