Vegan Natural Oval Basket

Hand-woven from the elephant grass which grows in the rich flood plains of the White Volta near the village of Bolgatanga, Northern Ghana. Equipped with vegan handles. They’re perfect for shopping, in the garden, around the home or just sitting pretty. We include a care and shaping guide to keep your basket looking its best.
Since our vegan baskets do not include reinforced leather handles, please treat them gently.

Meet our weaver, Abanye Asackpala:
“Weaving wasn’t part of my family tradition—I actually learned basket weaving from my mother-in-law and sisters-in-law.
At the time, I didn’t have a steady job apart from farming. and needed a way to earn extra income. I used to watch them weaving every day, and on market days, I sometimes went along to help sell their baskets.
Seeing how much they gained from weaving, I decided to ask my mother-in-law to teach me. She agreed, happy to share her skills because I was eager to learn.
Talata, my husband’s younger sister, took the time to teach me everything about working with straw, including how to select the best ones.
I started with a mini round basket, and within a few weeks, everyone was impressed by how quickly I had picked it up. Soon, I could weave different styles. I always weave natural baskets as a tribute to my mother-in-law, who only wove natural styles.
Basket weaving has become my sole source of income, but it’s more than just work for me. I love sitting among my family and friends while I weave, chatting and sharing stories. It’s my way of entertaining myself while creating something beautiful.”

Are your natural baskets sustainable?
Our entire range of Vegan Bolga baskets are individually hand woven by our creative friends in Ghana. The raw elephant grass is a 100% sustainable natural material. The grass is harvested, dried and finally boiled to dye. The weavers split each length into two then roll it to give it more strength. Each weaver has their own special techniques. Baskets may take 3 days to one week to make depending on the size, design and intricacy of the patterns.
