Description
The African Teke mask originates from the upper Ogowe region in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Gabon. Traditionally, Teke masks are used in ceremonies such as weddings, important community gatherings, and cultural celebrations. The Teke people, known for their rich heritage and craftsmanship, are a trading community—their name, “Teke,” means “to buy.”
The Kidumu society, known for creating these masks, emphasises the importance of family and community. The masks often hold cultural significance and are used to symbolise unity, tradition, and spirituality within the tribe. The village chief, as a spiritual and cultural leader, played an essential role in preserving traditions and leading ceremonies that strengthened the community’s connection to their heritage.
