Description
At 1.4m long, this large helmet crest style mask has a striking presence. The elongated jaw and large rolling horns show a distinctly Malian influence. Crocodiles are considered a fierce but protective spirits in Bobo, Bamana and Dogon cultures. The beautifully carved horns represent the antelope; a protective spirit who is often evoked at harvest ceremonies and initiation rites to fend off evil. This mask was surely created as an imposing guardian. The carefully detailed metal work would have been a labour of love for the metalsmith. A truly stunning mask.
