Weaving baskets in Ghana: A beautiful tradition

The art of weaving is timeless and multi-generational, predominantly undertaken by the women in the village. A very social activity, the women will often sit inside or outdoors underneath a lush mango tree, singing, dancing and laughing as they weave — a beautiful tradition that delights and inspires, often prompting the men and children sitting beside them to join in.

Each basket is handwoven from sustainable and eco-friendly materials, including the locally sourced elephant grass which grows in the flood plains around Bolgatanga in Northern Ghana. Every item is made to last. The elephant grass is harvested, dried and finally boiled to dye.

Once ready, the weavers split each length of grass into two, rolling it to strengthen the material. Each weaver has their own special technique, their own special touch.
