Sahel blankets are woven in Burkina Faso on a traditional strip loom, a craft carried out by male weavers.
The weaver sits inside the loom on a low stool and works the treadles with his feet while guiding the shuttle by hand.
Cotton is spun into narrow strips on this loom, then sewn together to build the width of the finished blanket, the technique behind its banded pattern. Because each strip is worked by hand, each blanket is unique.
