Planter Basket – Castings

woven planter basket

This vegan planter basket began as elephant grass (veta vera) growing on the White Volta flood plains.
A Frafra weaver in Bolgatanga wove it tight enough to stand upright on its own, which is why it holds a pot plant steady.

FAQs

What else can I keep in a planter basket?
A planter basket also holds books, magazines, toys, or rolled towels in the bathroom, and the tight weave keeps the walls upright even when it’s half empty. For bigger loads, hamper baskets are wider and have leather handles for carrying.

Does a planter basket have a waterproof lining?
A planter basket is unlined, made from elephant grass alone, so the pot needs a saucer underneath to catch water. Keeping the elephant grass dry is the main thing, and the Bolga basket care guide covers the rest.

Can a planter basket be used outdoors?
A planter basket does well in a covered outdoor spot such as a verandah or balcony. Rain and all-day direct sun wear down elephant grass and fade the colour, so bring it under cover in wet weather.
