A large, bowl-shaped storage basket from elephant grass, with handles made from leather offcuts. Holds throw blankets, toys, laundry, or firewood.

A set of three African baskets in alternating warm and deep dark-toned stripes, with a fine twisted-weave band near the rim. The three sizes nest inside one another, so they store compactly when they’re not in use.

Hamper basket woven in Bolgatanga

This hamper basket was woven in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region of Ghana, by a Frafra weaver who started at the centre of the base and built outward to the full width of the bowl.
The elephant grass (veta vera) grows on the White Volta flood plains, and every strand is split and twisted before weaving, which is what lets a basket this wide hold its shape.

FAQs

How is a hamper basket different from a laundry basket?
A hamper basket is a low, wide bowl, roughly 20 to 30cm high and 35 to 60cm across, and always open at the top. Bolga laundry baskets are tall and upright, so they hold more washing on less floor, and they come open or with a flat or peaked woven lid.
A hamper suits things you reach into often, like blankets or toys.
A laundry basket keeps a full load out of view.

What sizes do hamper baskets come in?
Hamper baskets come in small, medium, and large. A small, 34 to 41cm across, holds a couple of throws or a toddler’s toys.
A medium, 41 to 46cm, takes the blankets for a whole lounge room. A large, 46cm and over, fits spare pillows or a doona.
