Description
The Bwa serpent mask is celebrated for its dramatic form and expressive movement.
This mask depicts a serpent, an animal with positive, protective qualities in Bwa mythology. During masquerades, the serpent’s head twists rapidly from side to side, making its long, flexible body appear to undulate – an effect emphasised by the irregular zigzag patterns on its towering structure. Performed at harvest celebrations, funeral rites, initiation ceremonies, and community events, these masks are brought to life by male dancers accompanied by men’s drumming and women’s singing, showcasing acrobatic skill and choreographed precision.
A speciality of southern Burkina Faso, Bwa masks embody a range of protective spirits from nature. The serpent mask, with its abstract geometric design and monumental scale, continues to be admired for its sculptural elegance and symbolic significance, while influencing early 20th-century Western artists with its bold, dynamic forms.
