Description
The Bwa butterfly mask has long been admired for its vibrant form and symbolic depth.
Contemporary Bwa plank masks come from the Bobo Oule culture of Burkina Faso and originated with the Nuna people in the south of the country. Butterfly masks, like other Bwa works, embody a range of protective spirits drawn from nature, including birds, monkeys, and the sun itself. This mask specifically embodies Do, the spirit of renewal, celebrated during dances marking the arrival of the first butterflies of the rainy season.
Typically flat and painted with bold patterns, butterfly masks use contrasting light and dark pigments that are often interpreted as representing the dichotomy of innocence and knowledge. They are performed at religious ceremonies and community celebrations, combining sculptural elegance with cultural significance.
