FAQs

A Dogon door is a hand-carved wooden panel worked in djala (Khaya senegalensis), a dense red-toned hardwood, made by the Dogon people of Mali along the Bandiagara escarpment in the central Mopti region.
The panel is covered with rows of ancestor figures and geometric symbols drawn from Dogon mythology.
Many are carved from a single plank.

Dogon doors were traditionally made to seal granaries where grain and millet were stored, and to close the entrances of family homes. The carved figures were believed to guard what lay behind the panel, protecting the harvest and the household from harm. That protective role is why the surface is so densely worked, and the same symbolism carries across the wider collection of African masks.

The symbols on a Dogon door usually show rows of ancestor figures alongside motifs of protection and fertility.
Ancestral figures reference the lineage of a family or community, while other carvings connect to Dogon creation stories and the spirits believed to watch over daily life.
The same figures appear across our African statues, carved in wood and cast in bronze.

Many Dogon doors carry a carved wooden lock, a bolt mechanism made in wood rather than metal.
The lock sits to one side of the panel and usually has its own geometric carving. It reflects how Dogon doors traditionally fastened shut over a granary or home, and several doors in this collection have one.

Yes. These are hand-carved Dogon doors from Mali, worked in djala hardwood and chosen for the symmetry of the panel and the quality of the carving.
They are vintage pieces, between around 15 and over 40 years old, carved in the Dogon tradition rather than produced as reproductions.

A Dogon door is hung flat against a wall so the full carved surface shows, and its size suits a hallway, an entryway, or a feature wall in a larger room.
Set beside other hand-carved pieces such as African stools, the door sits within a group of West African carved objects.
