Woven by hand in the Bolgatanga region of Ghana, these fans are crafted from sustainably sourced elephant grass grown in the surrounding flood plains. The grass is soft, malleable and locally harvested, while the dyes used are non toxic and chosen to highlight natural tones alongside vibrant patterns. Many styles feature upcycled goat leather handles for strength and comfort, with an increasingly popular leather free option available for those seeking vegan designs.
This same attention to material and detail can also be seen in our fabric fans, which offer an alternative take on traditional hand fans while honouring the same weaving heritage. Bolga woven fans are handmade in and around Bolgatanga in northern Ghana, using sustainably sourced elephant grass that grows in the surrounding flood plains. The grass is locally harvested, hand-dyed with non-toxic dyes, and woven into a flexible yet sturdy fan shape.
The result is a lightweight, functional fan that can be held in the hand, or sit pretty hanging on a wall.
The woven fans are available with upcycled leather handles, while the vegan alternatives are leather-free.
Every fan is woven by hand, supporting long-standing weaving traditions and providing ongoing, fair work for local weaving families.
Bolga woven fans are made from elephant grass and have a firm, structured form. They hold their shape and have a sculptural quality, which suits them to being held in the hand or hung on the wall.
Fabric fans are handmade from African cotton print fabric and finished with an upcycled leather handle and clasp.
The cotton is sourced locally in Ghana and valued for its strength and quality. These fans have a softer construction and fold flat, making them easy to carry or store, while also being kept on display around the home.
Both styles are handmade in Ghana using locally sourced materials. The difference comes down to material and structure: woven fans keep their shape, while fabric fans are flexible and fold away.
