Although batik techniques arrived in West Africa through trade with Asia, communities such as the Yoruba people of Nigeria and the Wolof of Senegal transformed the practice into something uniquely their own. Hot wax is carefully applied to fabric to resist dye, allowing patterns and imagery to emerge gradually through multiple layers. This process gives each piece a depth and texture that printed fabric cannot replicate.

The designs themselves often hold meaning, reflecting community, spirituality, daily rituals or moments of celebration. Across Bashiri’s collection, these handcrafted textiles sit naturally alongside other forms of African art, including traditional barber boards and contemporary paintings created by artists throughout West Africa.
