The true West African djembe, direct from Ghana!

Description

Our Ghana Djembes come to us hand carved, direct from Ghana, where we have maintained a close relationship with master instrument makers for over twenty years. Then, we choose the ropes and skins and build the djembes in our St Kilda headquarters.

About the Shells:

Our Ghana djembes are all carved from sustainably sourced Twenaboa. Twenaboa is a medium density timber, lighter than hardwoods. These shells tend to have loud bass ranges, high slaps, and offer great portability.

We are respectful of the limited resources mother nature has afforded us. We are dedicated to giving back to our planet and balancing our environmental imprint. As such, we have started two Tree planting initiatives across two continents. In Ghana, our joint venture with registered NGO Denyigba is an exciting opportunity to re-forest hardwood mahogany. Every time we sell a Ghana djembe, we plant and nurture a new Hardwood tree.

Through these programs you can be sure that when you purchase a drum from Bashiri, you are giving back to our planet.

About the Hides:

We use a range of natural, ethically sourced goat skins from various sources, selecting skins to match each shell. We take care to find the best hide for each shell to maximise its dynamic range. Thinner skins are responsive, sound higher and brighter, and are easier on the hands for new players. They also have higher volume so are well-suited to solo drums. Medium skins are well balanced with warm tones and bright slaps. They are versatile and suit just about any drum. Thick skins are rich and warm and once settled they have a very melodic quality. Better suited to drums with thicker walls.

Looking for a bag, hat or strap for your new drum? Check out our djembe accessories here on our sister site.

All djembes require periodic tuning as the skin settles. We offer free, life-long on every Ghana Djembe bought from us. Just drop your drum in to our St Kilda shop and we’ll do our best to crank it on the spot for you, or you can pick it up the next day. We’ll also give you advice on how to best look after your drum. Your djembe comes with our free Drum Care and Tuning Guide to help you tune at home and get the most out of your drumming experience!

We recommend 10″ and 11″ for younger players or those looking for a portable “fun size” option. For adults and anyone keen to pursue the West African djembe experience, we recommend sizes 12″ and up.

Note: Pictures are for reference only. Colours and carvings vary. Each drum is hand made and unique.
