Description
These fertility dolls are known in Ghana as akua’ba. They are traditionally carved from wood and used ritually by the Ashanti people of what is now southern Ghana. They feature large disc-like heads which represent the female womb and are carried by women who hope to conceive. Traditional belief holds that if a woman carries an akua’ba on her back, she will give birth to a healthy and attractive baby.
