Description
Mudcloth is an iconic symbol of West African art and cultural heritage. Also known as Bogolanfini, mudcloth was pioneered by the women of Mali’s Bambara culture centuries ago. Each piece of hand stitched and hand-dyed cloth tells a story. Patterns represent cultural and environmental knowledge, wealth, relationships and status.
A single piece can take up to 3 months to produce with a careful process of dying and re-dying using mud to set the colours. Contemporary Malian artists use mudcloth designs and techniques in their paintings and designers continue to make it a fashion feature.
