Description

The Lobi are an ethnic group that originated in what is today Ghana. Many of the Lobi migrated into southern Burkina Faso in 1770, and later into the Ivory Coast. The name Lobi originates from two Lobiri words; lou (meaning forest) and bi (meaning children), literally ‘Children of the forest’.

The Lobi do not use masks. Instead, they create male and female spirit figures called bateba with heads sculpted on top of a post planted in the ground. Bateba is considered as a living being and may see, communicate, and intervene on behalf of its thil spirit. Every house has a small shrine room set apart for the worship of ancestral spirits. These shrines are built under the instructions of a sorcerer and are fitted with a variety of wooden statues together with an assortment of clay sculptures and domestic objects. Frequent sacrifices are made at these shrines to ensure the goodwill of the ancestors, and to avoid Illness and misfortune.

Lobi sculpture can be categorised by large heads depicted on a post, serving as guardians of the house. Many examples are sculpted with great care and attention to detail.
