Description

Doyo Nwantantay plant Mask embodies a water spirit and is traditionally a part of agrarian rituals and celebrations.

The large crescent on top of the masks represents the moon and sun which usher new life. The facial features typically embody owls in supernatural form, while the nose is representative of the hornbill, and the chequered patterns are hoof prints of antelope. When danced, these positive spirits are channelled through the mask to spread their good fortune.

The chequer-board light and dark geometric patterns are understood and interpreted in increasingly complex ways depending on the observer. The use of light and dark pigments represent dichotomy of innocence and knowledge.

The  highly abstracted and geometric forms of the Bwa and Bobo played an important inspirational role in the development of Western art movements of the early 20th century.
