Bobo Crocodile Mask :: (BF-BOBO-0015)

Description

Nuna communities of the Bobo people of Burkina Faso are formed around the worship of natural spirits. Like many masks of this region, the influences of surrounding cultures is apparent; in this case shades of Bwa and Gurusi styles. The crocodile’s body is covered with scales in a chequerboard like pattern, representing the separation between knowledge and innocence. Crocodile masks are danced in pairs with fluid, undulating motions.
