N’tomo masks come from the Bamana people of what is now Mali in West Africa.
Boys wear a Bamana N’tomo mask as they pass through the early cycle of initiation into manhood. The masks represent the lessons the boys are taught during the initiation.

These masks represent the legendary ancestor of the Bambara. They are a symbol of protection. They also hold importacncused at agricultural festivities and to prevent illness.
