Description
This statue couple comes from the Bozo ethnic group. They are the oldest inhabitants of their region which neighbours the Dogon and are known ‘the masters of the Niger river’. Although the majority have converted to Islam, they preserve Animist traditions
Bozo figurines are rare and are not well-documented, but those that are known are linked to annual ceremonies
We found these fertility statues in Mopti, Northern Mali
They are 60 years old
