Description

The Mossi are one of the largest ethnic groups of Burkina Faso, with populations concentrated to the eastern border.

This statue, also known as “Biiga”, is created by Mossi blacksmiths and is commonly used  during rituals to encourage  infertility in young women. The form is simplified yet distinctive in its structure and is designed to emulate the beauty of the female figure.

The statues are modeled in homage to ancestors  and powerful women who represent the ideals of the Mossi people. Traditionally, the statue is rarely exhibited in public, as many people prefer to place it in a sacred place in the home.
