Description

Gurunsi is a collective term for a group of cultures (Gurensi, Kasena, Lyele, Nuna, Nunuma, Sisala, and Winiama) which share the territories of Southern and Central Burkina Faso. This is a classic example of the Gurunsi style, features the combination of black, red and white patina and the exemplification of a revered bush spirit: the snake. The snake is a distinctly spiritual creature, often believed to be inhabited by spirits and acting as conduits of ancestors. Snake masquerades can appear at any ceremony as a storyteller, but are especially associated with funeral ceremonies.
