Description

This is a beautifully carved mask that combines human and animal features.

The Djimini are known as a sub-group of the Senufo. Though being heavily influenced by the neighboring Senufo in their art, the Djimini people of the Ivory Coast have incorporated these influences into their own identifiable style. The Djimini live in the northeastern region of the Cote d’Ivoire and their village is considered to be the most important residential unit.

Masks such as this, of a face with horns, representing bush cows, were worn by members of the secret society who appeared to dance with the masks at funerals and many other ceremonies. Such masks were worn with an elaborate costume consisting of a shirt, grass skirt, and trousers made from locally woven cotton.
