Description

The Baule are agriculturists; yams are the staple, supplemented by fish, and coffee and cocoa are major crops. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism, great tolerance, an aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, and secret societies. According to the Baule mythology, the ram is a heavenly demon or a spirit of agriculture. The ram mask has many male attributes and symbolizes a male character. Its strong and beautiful spiral horns signify strength and power.

These masks are used on the celebration of the new harvest, at the visit of important guests, or at the funerals of notables.
